Biology Science Topic

Today room 4 students visited the aquarium in Napier to experience some hands on science learning. The students were Marine Biologists and they were able to dissect a fish using the special tools that scientists use.

We learnt how to tell if a fish was a male or female fish. We found the heart, stomach (and the stomach contents), intestines and closely inspected the gills. Everyone coped very well and all the children who went participated.

Thank you to the parents, caregivers and grandparents who transported the children to the aquarium, and helped to supervise them.

Carol is an educator at the aquarium.  She is showing the children a model of the anatomy of a fish.
We are learning about the male fish.
Carol models how to dissect a fish using scissors and a scalpel.

Out comes the magnifying glass …

Elliot was very involved in this activity.  Lachlan watches on.
Kyleigh and Jaimee work well together.

Sione was very interested in what was inside the fish.
Careful cutting girls …
Nice teamwork boys!

  2. Well done on your Aquarium visit Room 4. It was great to see how well you all participated and listened. I was surprised at how small the sole fishes heart was and I enjoyed seeing all those Terrapins swimming and soaking up the heat under their lamp together.
