Biology Science Topic

Today room 4 students visited the aquarium in Napier to experience some hands on science learning. The students were Marine Biologists and they were able to dissect a fish using the special tools that scientists use.

We learnt how to tell if a fish was a male or female fish. We found the heart, stomach (and the stomach contents), intestines and closely inspected the gills. Everyone coped very well and all the children who went participated.

Thank you to the parents, caregivers and grandparents who transported the children to the aquarium, and helped to supervise them.

Carol is an educator at the aquarium.  She is showing the children a model of the anatomy of a fish.
We are learning about the male fish.
Carol models how to dissect a fish using scissors and a scalpel.

Elliot was very involved in this activity.  Lachlan watches on.
Kyleigh and Jaimee work well together.

Sione was very interested in what was inside the fish.

Candidate Teachers @ St Mary's School

This year we have 5 Candidate Teachers from the Eastern Institute of Technology (EIT) working at our school. The children are enjoying having the teachers in our classes. They are at our school for 2 days each week.

Today they spent part of the afternoon working with children from rooms 4 & 5 in groups to do some PE. This was an opportunity for them to get to know the students. They will have follow up lessons with the same children for the next few weeks.
